The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Completes a Series of Specialized Trainings to Combat Labor Exploitation
As part of its efforts to counter human trafficking, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted six capacity-building trainings on combating labor exploitation for relevant specialists from the labor, employment, and social protection authorities of the Republic of Belarus. The final training took place in February 2025 in Brest, bringing together 28 qualified representatives from territorial social service centers, including social workers, psychologists, and other professionals directly involved in assisting vulnerable populations in the Brest region. These trainings were held with the support of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Belarus in all regional centers.
As a result of the training sessions, 163 specialists from labor, employment, and social protection authorities enhanced their qualifications in identifying and referring victims of human trafficking for subsequent rehabilitation and reintegration, helping to minimize the social consequences of exploitation.
"I have participated in IOM trainings before, and each time they provide new knowledge and useful skills. These trainings are particularly valuable for their practical focus—they offer not only theoretical foundations but also real tools that can be applied immediately in our work. For our region and the entire country, this knowledge is highly relevant," emphasized Ella Skalkovich, Head of the Crisis Support Department at the Kobryn Territorial Social Service Center and a participant in the training.
"I used to think that I had never encountered victims of human trafficking, but now I realize that such cases exist—we just don’t always recognize the key indicators. This training helped me understand how widespread the problem is, even within our country. As specialists, it is crucial for us to be attentive, empathetic, and provide quality assistance. I am grateful to IOM for the opportunity to expand my knowledge and professional skills," said Zhanna Kalenkovich, a psychologist at the Kamyanyets Territorial Social Service Center and a participant in the training.
IOM Belarus continues to actively support national efforts to combat human trafficking by strengthening the capacities of specialists and improving mechanisms for protecting vulnerable populations.
